Crawling to the Pubs- Part 2
I am proud to announce that Sticker Search 2010 is officially over.
I may still join my friends Brandy and Jessi on their quest to finish the card but as of last night, i have hit my 25. Completed entries are entered into a drawing for a $1000 bar tab and i can just feel that it has my name on it!! :)
Here's what we hit last night:
Dino's
Warehouse District on Tchop and Calliope
I like Dino's. I've been here a number of times and have never really had a problem. Occasionally when they have live music, its a bit too loud/crowded but overall its generally good. Yesterday in particular the atmposphere was great and the bartender was super friendly.
Eiffel Society
Uptown- on St. Charles
This place was cool. It looked like something out of Moulin Rouge and the elevator especially had this creepy antique feel to it. They weren't actually open (they're apparently closed tuesdays) but we found the business office and the guy gave us a sticker if we promised to come back and have a drink next time. Seems expensive but i would like to go back.
Bulldog- Magazine
I like the crowd at this place. Sometimes its a bit TOO crowded but last night was fine. Bartender was cool, bathroom was clean. Mixed drinks are on the high side but it was happy hour so it was a double for the price of a single so that was good.
Nacho Mamas- Magazine
I always seem to run into someone i know here... i didn't last night but in almost every other time, i had. Weird. Anyway...its a good little place. Food/drinks aren't anything to write home about but they're fine and the waitress we had was really sweet. Decent people go there and its got a good feel.
Oak Wine Bar
Oak St- off Carrollton
This was a cool little place. Its just opened and its very Sex and the City. Crowd was a bit of the stuck up type and drinks were very expensive but the bartenders were relatively friendly. The greatest thing was the 16 year old singer/piano player. He did a lot of Elton John and Billy Joel covers and was FANTASTIC. For a few other songs, he was joined by a couple other musicians. We stayed here much longer than anticipated listening to him (them.) The glass of wine i had was tasty but it was $12. I should have looked at the menu. They apparently have food too but its all fru fru stuff. Would be a good stop on a bachlorette party barhop.
Rivershack

This place had the honor of giving me my last sticker... i even have a picture with the nice bartender there.
Its a dive but you know that going in. Tequila Sunrise was not very good...note to self, do not order that from there again. But the place is fun...lots of decor and what not.
I'd been there for lunch before and a couple of times for live music but its not a bad place to just hang out for a bit on a random tuesday night either.
Once we started hitting six places a night, this task went by a lot quicker! Thanks to Hunter it was no longer a game, it was a quest. Big thanks also to Jessi, Mike, Brandy, Jen and Jeff P! (And all the others who joined me at some point in the last few weeks.)
I hope the Gambit does something like this again next year. It was a lot of fun and i'm glad i got to try so many different bars that i otherwise may not have ever gone to.

Crawling to the Pubs...
The Gambit has put out this game called Bar Stampede. It came out around Thanksgiving and ends on Thursday (right before New Years.) There's a "playing card" with about 40 different bars on it. The object is to hit 25 of them and get little stickers to place on the card.
When i first heard about this i was determined to win. Its the sort of silly little thing that most people would want to do but not have enough patience to carry out.
I've been carrying around this newspaper clipping in my purse for a month now and have enlisted the help of most of my friends to complete this task.
Last night i hit 6. Would have been 11 but 5 were closed.
Here are my impressions of the bars we hit last night:
Shamrock
Mid-City... where Rock N Bowl used to be.
They've turned it into this Color of Money type pool hall. The entire area that used to be bowling lanes, are now pool tables. Its actually really great if you're into pool and stuff.
There's still a bar area, though and mixed drinks were priced well and the bartender was very friendly.
Ladies room is amazing! There's an entire lounge area!
We went Sunday night and the place was empty.
Bayou Beer Garden
Mid-City... on Jeff Davis
Kind of a hole in the wall.... drinks were averagely priced and bartenders were reasonably friendly. There was a long bar area, a pool table, couple of video poker machines.... mixed sort of crowd. Very "standard" bar atmosphere. Nothing really stood out here for me.
Banks St. Bar
Mid-City... on Banks St (imagine that!)
Hole in the wall but drinks were a bit high. Bartender was alright. Music was good! Pretty empty but again, Sunday night after Christmas.... bar stools were not comfortable but there was enough room to move around so it was okay.
Clever Wine Bar
Mid-City .... in the American Can Company Building
Had a sort of swanky hotel bar feel. Crowd was a trendy upscale African American group. Bartender was nice and there were a couple wine specials for $5. Seating was loungy and it was def a different kind of experience- sorta W.I.N.O. meets LePhare.
Bull Dog Mid-City
On Canal.
No description necessary.... who hasn't been there?
It gets a bit too crowded for my taste at times and drinks aren't exactly cheap (for a mixed drink person.... i wish i could get into beer.) But i like the atmosphere, the bartenders were okay and i like the type of crowd that goes there.

On our way home last night, Hunter and I stopped here for a sticker. We were the youngest people in there by about twenty years. Bartenders were friendly though and drink prices were reasonable. There was kareoke and a box of wine behind the bar... classy.
Music was terrible and i'm pretty sure there was a disco ball.
Can't say i'm not committed, though!

Its a Metry-brah kind of place but the bartenders were nice and it was very open and the night we went there was a film industry party going on so the people were ....either cool or douchy. But that had no bearings on the merit of the bar.

More of a dive sports bar next door to C. Beavers. Bartender was nice and it was empty when we were there. They apparently get a decent crowd for Saints games though.
Lucy's

I CAN NOT STAND this place! Its very popular with lots of people i know but i feel clostrophobic and annoyed whenever i'm there. There's always gobs of people which make it impossible to get to the bar. Bartenders are rude and stock expensive drinks.
I only went here for this trip because i happened to be in the neighborhood

This is a new place which seems like it'd have a cool vibe to it and is apparently nice on certain occasions. I went right after a Saints game and it was a mad house! Same story as Lucy's...expensive drinks, rude bartenders, gobs of people. No thank you.

Again with the rude bartenders! The place was not crowded but the night i went, the lady behind the bar was awful. Drinks were a bit high and the place was frequented by people 50s+
Decor is all Marilyn Monroe. Wonder if "Oscar" is Oscar Wilde....
Winston's

I like Winston's. It gets a bit crowded sometimes but if you go when its not, its a great place. Bartenders are pretty nice, drinks are average and they have amazing cheese fries. Crowd was friendly and atmosphere is laid back and chill.
Phil's Grill

This place was on the list b/c they have a bar but truth be told, i didn't order a drink...only a hamburger. Which was good. I'm a very picky eater so i like that i get to customize it however i like. And the fact that its in Harahan is a plus for me because as a Harahan/River Ridge person, my options are usually limited!
Superior Grill
Uptown
Never again will i come here in Cinco De Mayo .... but when its just a regular night, i really like this place. Its overrated and overpriced but i still enjoy the atmosphere and even though they cost a million dollars, i'm still a fan of their frozen strawberry margaritas. The night we went, the waiter was almost too friendly but i've never had a problem with their wait staff. Not some place i'd go to on a too regular basis but once in a while, i do enjoy a trip to the Superior Grill.

Another restaurant/bar that has a location in lovely Harahan! When we went this last time, i didn't drink but the food was good. Service was AWFUL but i think it was just this one time.... in the past i hadn't had a problem. Fair atmosphere, other patrons are average. Pretty standard chain tex mex establishment

I like this place! Its got a really cool nightclub feel to it and whenever i've gone, i've managed to avoid the crowd so its real chill and inviting. Drinks are good and bartenders are nice, on the expensive side but not too bad. When i went with a friend this past week, we were the only ones in there... of course it was like 4pm on a thursday.
St. Joe's

Went here the other day after Philips.... in times past its been very crowded and very smoky. I like the sort of crowd that hangs out here, there's just often too many of them. Bartenders and prices are about average.
This particular visit was right after they opened from a private event so the bar wasn't too bad and we were able to sit by the window and people watch on Magazine St.
Kajun Pub

I first went here four years ago when i was working on a play at the theatre down the street. A cast member was working there and he made us the strongest jello shots i've ever had! Employment has changed since then and the new bartender ladies are awful-- just rude and mean and terrible. I almost don't ever want to go back there. They gave me trouble about getting a sticker and were just not nice.
Atmosphere is cool otherwise...very diverse group of people and its fun to just sit back and sorta take it all in.
Witt's Inn

Drinks are a little high and the one or two bartenders that i'd dealt with in the past were very cool. The lady tending bar this last time i was there was not friendly at all. This is a big deal to me. If the bartender isn't cool, i don't want to be at the bar.
I like the atmposhere of this place though and most of the people that go there. Its centrally located and usually isn't overwhelminly crowded.
Still have 7 (i think) more places to go before Thursday!
